Supporting a Cause Close to Our Heart: BBQ on the Green

At Verstech, we’re always thrilled to give back to causes that mean something to us. Whether it’s lending a hand to a local initiative or working with organizations we believe in, charity projects have a special place in our hearts. One such project we’re incredibly proud of is our pro-bono web development for the BBQ on the Green event. Held annually, this wonderful event has one core mission: to raise awareness and funds for researching and treating Triple Negative Breast Cancer. You can find out more at www.bbqonthegreen.com

What Is BBQ on the Green?

For those unfamiliar, BBQ on the Green is more than just a fun community gathering—it’s a charitable event with a powerful purpose. By hosting an annual BBQ, this event has become a focal point for people coming together to support a cause that impacts so many lives. Not only do attendees enjoy delicious food, games, and music, but they also contribute to a vital cause: funding treatment and research for Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

The event has a special place in many hearts because it honours the memory of a remarkable individual, whose legacy continues to inspire generosity and hope. It’s about community, fun, and making a difference—something that resonates deeply with us.

Our Approach to the BBQ on the Green Website

When we were approached to build the website for BBQ on the Green, we took our usual approach to web design, keeping things clear, straightforward, and most importantly, user-friendly.

  1. Understanding the Requirements: Before diving into the design process, we spent time with the event organizers to understand their goals. What did they need the website to do? How could we help them raise awareness and make the event a success online?
  2. Wireframing and Planning: After understanding the needs of the event, we created wireframes—visual blueprints of the site’s layout. This helped the organizers visualize the site’s structure and gave us the opportunity to refine the design before the development phase.
  3. Designing with Purpose: We kept the design simple, focusing on ease of use and clarity. The event’s primary goal was to raise funds and inform people, so the website needed to be accessible, clear, and inspiring. We also wanted the site to reflect the fun, community-focused vibe of the BBQ event while still keeping it professional.
  4. Building with WordPress: Since this was a simple web build (no complex functionalities or tricky integrations), we chose WordPress as the platform. WordPress is incredibly easy to use and update, which means the organizers could manage the website themselves going forward—without the need for constant technical help. This was important, as it allowed them to keep the site up-to-date with upcoming events, fundraising efforts, and any other announcements.
  5. The Final Touches: After getting the feedback from the organizers, we tweaked the design and functionality to ensure the site met all of their needs. From adding event details to donation links, everything was crafted with the goal of making the website as easy to navigate as possible.

A Simple Build with Big Impact

While the website itself didn’t require complicated features or integrations, the impact it has is anything but simple. BBQ on the Green is an event that brings people together in a way that’s meaningful and impactful, and having a website that supports its mission makes all the difference.

By offering a platform that can easily share event details, collect donations, and raise awareness, the website acts as an extension of the event itself—helping to reach more people and gather more support for Triple Negative Breast Cancer treatment.

Join the Fun & Support the Cause

If you’re in the area or looking for a fun way to give back, BBQ on the Green is always a great way to spend your afternoon! Enjoy some good food, connect with like-minded people, and contribute to an amazing cause. And if you’re not able to attend, you can still help out by visiting their website to donate or learn more about how you can get involved.

Conclusion: Giving Back Through Web Design

We’re incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to support BBQ on the Green. It’s always rewarding to work on projects that make a difference, and this one is especially close to our hearts. It’s not just about designing websites; it’s about making sure that organizations like BBQ on the Green have the tools they need to keep doing great work for years to come.

Update 2025

Fast forward to 2025, and BBQ on the Green is still going strong! Despite the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, this annual event has been a consistent success. For over 10 years, BBQ on the Green has raised around £4,000 annually to support cancer treatment and research. The website we created has been a key part of this, helping spread the word, support donations, and keep the community engaged.

We’re proud to continue supporting this wonderful event, and we love knowing that our work is contributing to such an important cause. It’s not just about building websites—it’s about making a real difference in the world, one project at a time.
