Web Build for a Small Sports Club

01 December 2018 | Location: South West | Project Value: Under £5k

Project Overview: Revitalizing New Forest Volleyball’s Online Presence

New Forest Volleyball (NFV) is a dedicated sports organization based in Applemore, New Forest. They approached us with a crucial request: to revamp their existing website to make it more modern, functional, and user-friendly. NFV wanted the added capability to integrate an online shop where they could sell various products, including membership fees, club kits, and exclusive merchandise. Prior to this project, the organization’s website was developed by one of its board members. While functional, it lacked key features like e-commerce functionality and a content management system (CMS), rendering it static and difficult to update.

Being a small, volunteer-led, not-for-profit organization, NFV had to be mindful of their spending, so up until that point, the website was created in-house to keep costs minimal. However, the need for a more dynamic, professional online presence was clear. The NFV team needed an easy-to-manage website that could accommodate new features, such as a shop, while also allowing for secure online payments and offering seamless integration with social media platforms and sports league data.

Key Objectives:

  1. Create an easy-to-manage website that allows the team to update content and manage products.
  2. Add e-commerce capabilities to sell memberships, club kits, and merchandise.
  3. Implement secure online payments using Stripe, ensuring low transaction fees.
  4. Integrate NFV’s social media accounts for better community engagement.
  5. Automatically pull league tables and sports data from Volleyball England to keep fans and members updated.
  6. Ensure the site is mobile-responsive and functional across various devices.

Our Approach: Collaborative Process to Deliver the Perfect Solution

NFV came to us with a clear vision for their new website. They had specific ideas about the design they liked and what functionality was essential for the site. Our first step was to work closely with NFV to understand their goals and translate them into a digital blueprint. One of the most critical aspects of this project was ensuring that the website not only looked great but was also easy to maintain by multiple team members with varying levels of technical knowledge.

We began by developing a bespoke integration to pull real-time data from Volleyball England’s website to display league tables on NFV’s new site. This integration ensured that the NFV team didn’t have to manually update the league standings, saving valuable time and keeping the site automatically up-to-date.

Next, we presented the team with initial design mockups for the homepage. NFV had already provided some design ideas, so it was relatively easy to create a homepage that fit their vision. However, since NFV is a volunteer-led organization with many stakeholders, we needed to consider and integrate various opinions from trustees, volunteers, and other involved parties. This collaborative process was essential to ensure that the final website met everyone’s needs and wishes.

Design Process: A Fresh, Professional Look for NFV

NFV’s goal was to create a bright, engaging website that reflected the dynamic nature of their sports club while maintaining a professional aesthetic. They wanted the design to be visually aligned with their existing club branding and logo, while also ensuring it looked modern and appealing to a wide audience.

Our graphic design team worked closely with NFV, taking their feedback into account and producing a design that was fresh, clean, and aligned with the team’s brand. After receiving feedback and making a few adjustments to the design elements, we finalized the homepage and proceeded to design the other pages, including the new online store and the league table section powered by the Volleyball England integration.

The store itself needed to be simple to use, with clear product categories and easy navigation for both members and supporters. Additionally, the NFV team needed the ability to easily manage their store, adding or removing products as required. We ensured the backend CMS was intuitive enough for everyone at NFV to maintain the site independently, without requiring any advanced technical skills.

The End Result: A Modern, Functional Website That Reflects NFV’s Passion

After working closely with NFV, we were able to deliver a modern, functional website that surpassed their expectations. Despite working with a tight deadline and limited budget, the final product had all the features they needed, including:

  • E-Commerce Functionality: We integrated an online store where NFV could sell memberships, club kits, and branded merchandise. The store was equipped with secure payment processing through Stripe, which offered low transaction fees and a pay-as-you-go model, keeping costs manageable for the organization.
  • Responsive Design: The website is fully responsive, ensuring it works flawlessly across all devices, whether it’s a desktop computer, tablet, or mobile phone.
  • CMS for Easy Management: NFV now has full control over the content on their site. Through a simple-to-use CMS, the organization can update content, add new products to the store, and manage other elements of the site with ease. Granular permissions allow multiple team members to contribute to the site’s upkeep without risking unauthorized changes.
  • League Table Integration: The live league table integration from Volleyball England was a huge success, automatically pulling in up-to-date data so that NFV never had to manually update their standings. This automated feature kept the website fresh and relevant without requiring constant maintenance.
  • Social Media Integration: NFV’s social media accounts were seamlessly integrated into the site, helping to engage with their community and share content across platforms.
  • Professional Branding: The website’s design, color scheme, and layout reflect the professional nature of the organization, aligning perfectly with NFV’s branding while being visually engaging for fans and members.

NFV was extremely pleased with the final product and the speed at which we were able to deliver the new site, especially given their limited resources. The modern design, e-commerce functionality, and automated features have provided a solid foundation for NFV to grow their online presence and better serve their members and supporters.

Ongoing Support and Future Updates

Upon completion, we handed over the site to NFV, empowering them to manage and make changes to the site going forward. Over time, NFV has made updates to the website, including uploading new assets, changing their logo, and refining their branding. We continue to host the website for them on our reliable UK Hosting Platform, ensuring the site remains secure and performs optimally.

In Summary: A Website That Works for the Community

The website we built for New Forest Volleyball is a testament to how even a small, volunteer-driven, not-for-profit organization can leverage modern digital tools to make their operations more efficient, professional, and engaging. With the ability to manage the site independently, NFV can continue to evolve their online presence as they grow and expand their community. Whether it’s selling memberships, sharing news, or keeping up with league standings, the NFV website is now a powerful tool that helps them stay connected with their members and supporters.

Update 2025: NFV successfully took control of their site – making their own changes and updates as needed. From logo redesigns to content uploads, the organization had the flexibility to manage the site entirely on their own, with us providing ongoing hosting and support to ensure everything runs smoothly. Sadly, after 15 years, the club shut down in July 2025.
